EuResist in Africa - The ENNEA project

EuResist is supporting partner of the EDCTP networking action ENNEA: "Integrated training activities and IT infrastructures to improve capacities in eastern African area" (EDCTP JP.2009.10800.002) coordinated by Anders Sonnerborg (KI)

Further to that of Karolinska Institute (Sweden), the networking action sees the involvement of: Area Vasta Toscana sud-est (Italy, M. Toti - M. Zazzi), Muhimbili Hospital (Tanzania – F. Mugusi – M. Bakari), Addis Ababa Univ. (Ethiopia, G. Aderaye – D Fekade), Worlds friends Onlus - Neema Mamy Hospital (Kenya, G. F. Morino – N. Washington – M. Mwau), and EuResist as subcontractor and co-financing with its IT tools.

The project started in April 2010 has a duration of 3 years.

Overall objective of the project is to strengthen the capacities of the involved partners and countries to deal with the emerging issue of resistance to anti-HIV drugs. More in details this means:

  1. To upgrade lab infrastructure at involved sites in order to perform basic resistance measurements and to send amplified proviral DNA to KI and Area Vasta for viral DNA sequencing. The sequences will be sent back for resistance determination and phylogenetic analysis;
  2. To upgrade IT infrastructure at the involved sites in order to electronically store relevant clinical and resistance data;
  3. To train persons at the involved sites in order to be able to perform the aforesaid activities;
  4. To merge the data into the EuResist Integrated DB (EIDB) and realise a resistance prediction engine able to support doctors in (East) Africa to provide most effective medication, based on the specific (East) African situation (in terms of viral population, available drugs, health organisation…).

The project is organised in 4 Work Packages:

  1. Management (Leader: F. Incardona);
  2. Clinical Trials (Leader: M. Zazzi);
  3. Capacity building (Leader: D. Fekade) ;
  4. Networking (Leader: M. Bakari).
